Peter Collier, Western Australia’s State Training and Workforce Minister is so keen to get Irish workers to Western Australia he is going around the Australian Government to make it happen. “I’m working with Ciaran Cannon and the Irish Government and we’re going to go around the Feds on this thing.” said Mr Collier.
He intends to get, ”as many as they give us” by using temporary company-sponsored 457 visas. He visited Ireland in June where he met with Irish Minister for Training and Skills, Ciarán Cannon to discuss ways of speeding up the recruitment process. Commenting on the level of unemployment in Ireland Mr Collier said, ”A lot of these people are middle-aged, they’ve been retrenched. So, come over to Western Australia, spend 18 months to two years with us, help us out, then you can go home. We’ve got no language barrier, no qualification barriers, it’s a relationship born in heaven.”
The Australian Government is cautiously supporting the initiative by reclassifying Perth as a regional city for migration purposes and introducing enterprise migration agreements for big resources projects. It has also added 12,000 skilled migration places nationally and allocated WA 6200 State migration places, more than a quarter of the national total.
